Our Unique Philosophy

As a co-op, we are owned and controlled by our members. The guiding principles that credit unions were founded upon still remain strong at the Vermont State Employees Credit Union. The credit union idea is a simple one: People should be able to pool their money and make loans to each other.

In the early 1900s, people did just that: Those in need of borrowing relied on those who had saved. In return, the savers benefited from the repayment of the loan plus the interest. One hand helped another.

It's no different today in our Credit Union. VSECU members rely on each other. Together they pool resources so that each individual member is an owner and participant in our cooperative benefits.

Our Philosophy in Four Short Words

The old credit union adages, "not for profit, but for service" and "people helping people" are the pillars of our cooperative philosophy. And with these we include a new guiding principle, "our focus is you" — for we exist only to serve you, our members, and to help you reach your financial goals.

Our objective is not to make a profit for the benefit of outside stockholders. Our profits are passed down to those who choose to do business with us in the form of higher deposit rates, lower loan rates and affordable services.

And indeed we are "people helping people." The Credit Union serves as the core hub where members unknowingly help a fellow member every time he or she chooses the VSECU.
