While on Vacation... Keep Safe from ID Theft

Not too long ago, having your cash or travelers' checks stolen while away would put a serious damper on your vacation.

But as financial fraud becomes increasingly sophisticated, losing cash may be the least of your concerns. In our age of identity theft, criminals can use the information they get from stolen wallets and purses to drain bank accounts, borrow money and set up fraudulent credit card accounts.

Don't let identity thieves ruin your summer vacation. As reported in Sandra Block's "Your Money" column in USA Today, here are some pointers for keeping your cash, cards — and accounts — safe. (For more about the 8 tips shown below, see the full column in USA Today.)

  • Clean out your wallet before you leave... Be sure to remove any cards that show your Social Security number.
  • Use stored value cards instead of cash or debit cards.
  • Leave your checkbook at home.
  • Pack a backup credit card in case one of your cards is stolen or an account is closed.
  • Be aware of your surroundings... Carry cash and credit cards in a travel pouch, or money belt worn inside your clothes, in high-traffic areas prone to pickpockets.
  • Lock up your laptop.
  • Don't leave your rental agreement in the car.
  • When you check out, take your key card.
