Guard Against Credit and Debit Card Identity Thieves
- Remember to take your card back from the store clerk or wait staff. It's just common sense, but when you're in a hurry or become distracted, it's easy to overlook the obvious.
- Shield your card from prying eyes and those new cell phones with built-in cameras.
- Ink out any blank lines between the charges and the total when asked to sign a credit card receipt so that additional charges cannot be added after you leave. For instance, if you have already left a cash tip at the table, be sure to draw a line through the "Tip" entry and new "Total" on the receipt.
- Carry fewer cards. Two is sufficient - your VSECU credit card and a second as back-up.
- Shred credit card receipts, applications and any other documents bearing private information. Cross-shredders are very affordable now.
- Review your credit card statement and report suspicious charges immediately. You can monitor your VSECU credit card purchases as often as you wish through Credit Card Online.
