Safeguard Yourself from Internet Identity Thieves

Identity theft is a threat to everyone, especially Internet users. Here are some tips:

  • Be careful when completing sensitive information through an online form.
    • Make sure you see an "https" in the web address or a key/padlock icon at bottom of your browser window.
https and padlock icon - indications of a secure site
These indicate secure sites — where any data you submit is encrypted in transit.

  • If using a computer located in a public area to access your personal, private information, such as your VSECU account, be sure to protect yourself.
    • You'll want to click a "log off" or "sign out" link at the end of the session rather than simply closing your web browser.

  • Finally, use spam filters and firewalls to protect your computer files, and completely turn off your computer when it's not in use.
