Is a Used Car a Better Deal for You?

If your primary goal is to find dependable wheels at a price you can afford, then consider shopping for a used or "pre-owned" car. Before you buy, learn how to become a smart shopper. Here are a few tips:

Tip 1: Prioritize…to shop smart. Write down in order of priority the features that are the most important to you -- such as low gas mileage or child safety. Plus, there's a lot to choose from in the used auto market, whether you are browsing through the classifieds or touring the lots. Keep your priority list, VSECU loan calculations and other research handy, so that you are not distracted by the shiny chrome.

Tip 2: Research. The Internet is a great tool for car buying resources. See our Auto Research page for links that can help, including NADAguides.com, for pricing information and reviews. And see our Automobile Loan Center to learn more about what your Credit Union has to offer.

Tip 3: Get pre-approved. Visit or call us to see if we can pre-approve you for financing. A pre-approval may increase your dealer negotiating power. In addition, a VSECU Member Service Consultant will work with you to calculate how much car you can afford. Contact us or email info@vsecu.com. And see our current rates and terms to see more about our financing options.

Tip 4: Consult a mechanic. Once you've made your choice, do a background check. The dealer or the owner in a private sale should not object to releasing the car for a thorough inspection by an auto mechanic of your choice. And consult a vehicle history website, such as carfax.com, to check a car's history using its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

If all checks out to your satisfaction, then you are ready to make your purchase! For VSECU auto loan pre-approvals, apply now through this website for a low-interest auto loan.
