VSECU History

Improving the lives of Vermonters for over 75 years.

How it all began

In 1946, seven employees of the State of Vermont gathered to organize a credit union to offer affordable savings and credit for state employees. One year later, the Vermont State Employees Credit Union was chartered by Vermont. We’ve been deeply committed to the philosophy of people helping people and the credit union movement ever since.

Expanding our membership

As a not-for-profit financial institution, we are proudly dedicated to improving the quality of life for all Vermonters. At first, VSECU membership was open only to employees of the state of Vermont. Since then, our field of membership has continued to expand:

1960s

Membership expanded to include family members of any current member of the credit union.

2016

We established a new vision: “To inspire a movement that brings people together to empower the possibilities for greater financial, environmental, and social prosperity.” The goal of this vision was to align our organization with a larger movement of values-based and impact-driven organizations in Vermont and around the world.

2017

We expanded once more to welcome members of the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA), a non-profit regional trade association that aligns with VSECU’s vision of creating greater environmental prosperity for more Vermonters.

2023

On January 1, VSECU merged with New England Federal Credit Union (NEFCU) to build a stronger and more sustainable credit union. The merger more than doubled the membership and asset size of the organization, deepened its presence in Chittenden County, and strengthened its capacity to serve members in a rapidly changing financial environment.

Deepening our impact

At VSECU, we’re always looking for innovative ways to make a positive impact on our communities. We could just give money (and we do), but we are a financial cooperative, so it’s important that a large portion of our community impact is generated by members, for members.
