What does it mean to practice ‘green’ for a statewide credit union? It means we not only talk the talk, we walk the walk.
How are your New Year’s resolutions going? While it’s great to have a goal to work towards, sometimes we need a little inspiration to stay on target. At VSECU we have goals as well, and one of them is to make more progress towards our initiative of practicing ‘green.’ We’ve invested in energy efficiency and we experience the many benefits such as improved comfort and reduced energy usage while we save money. It feels great to be making progress on this goal and to help members with their goals we offer VGreen loans to make efficiency investments easy to finance.
VSECU has an environmental mission that we strive to uphold in our everyday operations at the credit union, and we know that our member-owners trust us to do what we say we will do:
VSECU is committed to finding opportunities within both our operations and business products to promote environmentally sound choices for our employees and our member-owners.

Here are some of the green projects and ongoing initiatives we are proud to report:
- Rutland branch – This award winning building is Gold LEED certified. Read more about our Rutland branch.
- St. Johnsbury branch – Our newest branch features local materials and is built to the same efficiency specifications as our Rutland branch. St. Johnsbury branch energy efficient roof system installation pictured above.
- Energy STAR certification – We will be seeking Energy STAR certification for our St. Johnsbury and Waterbury branches and renewal for our 2013 certification for our Rutland branch.
- Use of technology to enhance climate control to improve heating and cooling efficiency in four of our branches – Williston, Montpelier, St. Johnsbury and Rutland
The 2011 Vermont Comprehensive Energy Plan states that Vermont’s goal is to improve the energy fitness of 25% of the state’s housing by 2020 (that’s about 80,000 housing ‘units’) and that 90% of our 2050 energy needs are met through efficiency and renewables. That’s a tall order and to get there, we all have to do more. We’re working towards this greener goal at VSECU and we want members to have the opportunity to do their part, too.
Our VGreen loans help our members reach their green goals. These loans provide options to finance efficiency; from home energy improvements, heating system upgrades and solar installations to efficient appliances and vehicles. Discounted rates and extended terms make VGreen loans a great way to finance energy investments, which pay for themselves in the long run.
Ready to get started? Make 2014 the year of energy efficiency, and stay tuned for more about our progress. Check out VGreen loans and take the next step now. If we all take steps together, we can make real progress towards achieving our collective energy goals.
