A contribution to Age Well’s Meals on Wheels program is an investment in the health and wellbeing of seniors in Northwestern Vermont. 92% of individuals receiving Meals on Wheels say it enables them to remain living at home, 81% say it improves their health, and 90% say it makes them feel safer and secure. Meals on Wheels is the only food security program that meets both the nutritional and social needs of our aging population and yet remains significantly underfunded. We rely on a network of nearly 500 volunteers and on community donations to meet the growing number of seniors who need Meals on Wheels.
If selected as a We Care 2 donation recipient, the funds will be used to directly support Age Well’s Meals on Wheels program. As the largest provider of Meals on Wheels in Vermont, Age Well is serving more seniors each day. Last year, we served over 225,000 meals to nearly 2,000 individuals in Addison, Franklin, Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties. For some, Meals on Wheels may be their only meal of the day and the volunteer driver, the only face they see. The nutritious meal, friendly visit, and safety check help older Vermonters cope with three of the biggest threats of aging: hunger, isolation, and loss of independence. Meals on Wheels recipients reports show that recipients gain greater quality of life, need fewer hospital stays, and live longer.
