Home Share Now facilitates mutually beneficial home shares. While people of any age are welcome to enroll, home providers are often older adults with a spare bedroom to offer someone looking for affordable housing. Instead of rent, the home seeker delivers non-medical services like household assistance, companionship, and an overnight protective presence.

Because Home Share Now often works with vulnerable persons, it is critical that Home Share Now look out for the financial, emotional, physical, and mental health of its participants. A $2,000 grant from VSECU will support Home Share Now’s screening and vetting process, which includes in-person interviews, multiple reference checks, state and national criminal history, adult and child abuse and sex offender registries.

The vetting process applies to and protects both providers and seekers and is intended to both exclude inappropriate home sharing candidates and to make quality matches. Once a match is made, Home Share Now provides personalized written agreements, conflict prevention, and mediation when necessary. Home Share Now is the only program of its kind in the country with a master-level mediator on permanent staff.

“Wow. This grant from VSECU will enable our community members to live and age safely and happily at home,” says Christina Goodwin, Home Share Now’s executive director. “Central Vermont is fortunate to have partners like VSECU that enthusiastically support home sharing with enthusiasm and resources. Thank you.”
