The Intervale Center impacts the essential needs of Vermonters by harvesting food that would otherwise go to waste and distributing it for free by working with over 100 farms in every corner of Vermont each year to improve their business management skills, and by planting trees to protect our forests and water resources. This work is strengthening our food system, improving our rural communities, and improving quality of life for thousands of people in every county of our state.
In 2019, we have distributed over 40,000 pounds of fresh produce to families experiencing food insecurity, worked with 115 farms at every stage of business development, from beginning farmers to those working toward retirement, and planted over 32,000 trees, adding over 120 acres of new forest to our state. The Intervale Center should be chosen as a finalist because we are a nationally recognized leader in the work of sustainable agriculture and conservation working right here in Vermont to improve the lives of everyone in the state.
The We Care 2 donation would be used to impact:
Food: The Center’s gleaning and food rescue program successfully harvests and distributes 40-60,000 pounds of produce to 1,000 people experiencing hunger every summer. Our program is unique because we distribute food through a free CSA share and directly to other social service agencies that can use food as they see fit to benefit their clients in ways that are convenient, dignified, and community focused.
Environment: Our Conservation Nursery grows native trees ecologically and plants them across Vermont. Each year, we plant over 100 acres of new forest!
Financial Literacy: As a farm viability organization, we provide financial literacy and business development assistance to over 100 farms across Vermont each year.
