VSECU’s Shred Saturday on May 21, 2011 helped about 350 VSECU and community members protect themselves against identity theft by securely shredding their documents bearing private information. The free event destroyed 22,100 pounds of paper at five locations: Berlin, Williston, Rutland, St. Johnsbury and Bennington.
All shredding is done on-site by SecurShred, a professional document destruction company located in Williston. For the first time, the location at the Berlin Branch filled the SecurShred truck to its 10,000-pound capacity. “We are very sorry we had to turn some people away during the final 20 minutes of the event in Berlin,” said Lynette Kemp, who coordinated the event for VSECU. “It was a first for us, and so we are experiencing a few growing pains as Shred Saturday becomes more popular. We will have another Shred Saturday sometime this September or October, so we hope people will be patient and come back then.”
People cleaned out their collections of old tax returns, receipts, check registers, certificates and other documents and brought them by bag, box or bin to VSECU’s Shred Saturday, glad to finally free up some space in the garage, basement or attic. One member brought paperwork dating to the 1920s left to him when his parents passed away. For many, storing documents left to them by relatives can be a burden and so being able to destroy them safely is a great relief.
Please watch the VNews member newsletter, this website and branch signage for notice of the next Shred Saturday.
