VSECU Donates $1,300 to Improve Diets of People in Mental Health Recovery
In recent studies, it was found that people with mental health issues die 25 years earlier than the general population—in many cases due to health complications caused by poor diet and nutrition. With a $1,300 donation to Another Way, Inc., a community center based in Montpelier for people in mental health recovery, VSECU hopes to help them improve their diets and live longer, healthier lives.
For more than 20 years, Another Way’s community center has offered peer support, advocacy, resources and crisis response to people who are looking for alternative supports to the mental health system. These “psychiatric survivors” can relax and connect with others in the center’s welcoming, homelike atmosphere. They share meals, learn how to live in community, attend support gatherings and educational workshop, and access phones and computers.
To bring healthier fare into the community center, Another Way is working with Foodworks at Two Rivers, a local organization that provides fresh, organic foods at low cost to other local organizations that serve people in need. VSECU’s is proud to support this effort to increase the health and wellness of the members of Another Way.
