VSECU Tops $193,000 in 2017 Charitable Giving

Montpelier, Vt. – VSECU, a member-owned cooperative and not for profit credit union for everybody who lives or works in Vermont, allocated $193,688 during 2017 to support causes that positively impact and improve the lives of Vermonters.

Guided by VSECU’s values and sustainable principles, the CEO, Giving Committee, and Board of Directors allocate charitable funds in five areas: food, shelter, heat, environment, and financial literacy. When deciding which organizations will receive gifts, special focus is placed on geographic diversity and VSECU’s commitment to serving all Vermont communities.

“In a year that saw so much conflict on a national level, it was heartening to be reminded just how many people and organizations are committed to changing our world for the better, and to helping our neighbors without judgement or prejudice,” said VSECU’s CEO Rob Miller. “We’re very proud to have the ability to support so many hardworking people and organizations in their efforts to effect positive change across Vermont.”

Funds in 2017 were distributed to more than 50 different organizations across Vermont, including Spectrum Youth & Family Services, Bennington Idea Fund, Lamoille Housing Partnership, Faith in Action Northern Communities Partnership, Washington County Youth Service Bureau, ReSOURCE YouthBuild, EarthWalk Vermont, Fuel Your Neighbors, Northeast Kingdom Youth Services, Vermont Foodbank and many more.

The distribution of funds continues in March of 2018, when $23,000 of the total will be awarded to five Vermont charities through We Care 2, VSECU’s member directed, charitable giving program.

“We Care 2 is another way that member-owners can make their voice and values heard at VSECU,” said Simeon Chapin, Director of Community Development. “This program gives everyone the opportunity to direct our collective impact toward the organizations they support most.”

Each year, the We Care 2 program receives applications from qualifying charities across the state. VSECU’s Board of Directors Giving Committee chooses five finalists that demonstrate a commitment to meeting the essential needs of all Vermonters. During VSECU’s Annual Elections process, each member has the opportunity to cast a vote for their favorite finalist. Funds are distributed based on the percentage of votes each charity receives.

The five 2018 finalists are Charter House Coalition, Community Harvest of Central Vermont, Prevent Child Abuse Vermont, Mercy Connections, and Blue Star Mothers of Vermont.
